Sparkle Oral Care App
Era designed Sparkle from the ground up — an AI-powered oral health companion that moves oral care away from the bathroom sink and into every moment of daily life. Through deep user research, contextual design, and LLM-powered coaching, we built a product that feels less like a health app and more like a trusted friend who happens to know everything about your teeth. Our goal was to make oral care invisible, intelligent, and inescapably useful — wherever the user is.

Oral care lives at the sink. But acid, decay & stress doesn't.
The Challenge
The existing oral health app category was broken: reminder-driven, manually logged, and built entirely around a two-minute window in the bathroom. Meanwhile, the coffee sipped slowly over a meeting, the desk snack, the stressed jaw clench — these were the real drivers of decay, erosion, and gum disease.
We needed to redesign the entire category around how life actually works.

Three pillars. Zero friction.
Our Approach
We built Sparkle on a single conviction: the best oral health tracking is the tracking you never have to do. Every design decision eliminated a conscious action the user would otherwise need to take.
Identifying Insights
(UX Discovery)

We conducted 24 user interviews across three audience segments — daily coffee drinkers, desk workers, and parents — and ran a comprehensive audit of the existing oral health app landscape. Every competitor we reviewed shared the same flaw: they treated oral care as a bathroom habit. Our research confirmed it wasn’t.
Your mouth. Mapped. Instantly understood.
(Design)

The central challenge of oral health visualisation is translating nine complex clinical metrics into something a user understands in three seconds. The Bio-Web was our answer — a radar chart where every user immediately grasps that bigger is better, and that dented corners need attention. No legend required. No clinical jargon. Just your shape.
Warn/alert dots pulse with animated rings — the same visual language used in medical monitoring — so users know where to look without reading a single label. Tapping any dot opens a full coaching sheet from Sparkle with an explanation and an actionable quest.
From cold and clinical to warm and human.
The oral health category speaks in fear. Bleeding gums. Cavity risk. Tartar build-up. Sparkle was designed from the first word of copy with a different conviction: people follow coaches they trust, not warnings they dread.
Every Sparkle nudge is LLM-generated and profile-aware. The same gingivitis finding produces entirely different language for a 27-year-old coffee drinker versus a 52-year-old under medication. First-person always. One idea per message. No guilt. No moralizing.

Habits disguised as wins.
Sparkle doesn’t ask users to adopt new behaviours. It wraps existing context — the coffee, the commute, the desk, the bedtime — into micro-quests that earn XP. The intervention is invisible. The outcome is biological.
Quests are generated from the Bio-Web: tapping a Gingivitis dot immediately produces an “Add to Quests” CTA. The system knows which condition the user tapped, which category it belongs to, and what the evidence-based habit is. No manual configuration. The app connects the data to the action automatically.
XP accumulates toward tier progression — Bronze → Silver → Gold → Platinum → Diamond → Legend — creating a long-term motivation loop that rewards consistency over perfection.
A new category.
Ambient oral health.
Sparkle establishes a product category that didn’t previously exist: an oral health companion that lives entirely in daily life, not at the sink. The prototype demonstrates passive sensing, contextual AI coaching, visual health scoring, and a gamification layer that creates genuine long-term engagement. This is what preventive oral care looks like when it’s designed around humans rather than clinical protocol.
